La Crosse Polar Plunge, Pettibone Beach
Why Jump in Cold Water, You Ask?
The Polar Plunge is the winter fundraiser for Special Olympics Wisconsin. Since 1999, plungers and their supporters have raised nearly $19 million for Special Olympics athletes, right here in Wisconsin. Donations support the 18 different Olympic-type sports offered year-round, including National and World Games, as well as free health care screenings to ensure optimal health and performance during competition. The outcome? The opportunity for over 10,000 individuals with intellectual disabilities to experience joy, pride and respect. Pretty amazing, huh?
Still Not Sure?
The Polar Plunge is for everyone. It really is. From young to not so young, solos to teams, principals to employees, and plungers to non-plungers. The world unites during Plunge season. You can plunge solo, on a team with your best friends, on a team with your favorite co-workers, as a school group, as a church choir, or really… however you want. We just want you in the water! The event is jam-packed with fun and festivities, and there’s certainly a way for everyone to be involved!
It’s Easy to Take the Plunge
Simply register on-line at plungewi.org and begin raising pledges to earn some cool prizes! Don’t forget to invite your friends, family and coworkers to join your team. Too chicken to Plunge? That’s okay " there are a number of ways to get involved without getting wet! Check out our website for more information and a complete schedule of events.
Freezin’ for a Reason 5K
Prefer to support Special Olympics Wisconsin by running instead of Plunging (or maybe you’d like to do both!)? Join us for the Freezin for a Reason 5k! It’s a Polar Dash with a Splash! Break a sweat jaunting through Pettibone Park before you plunge into the Mighty Mississippi. Choose to run/walk the 5K only, or amp it up with the unbelievable experience of running the 5K then taking the Polar Plunge!
Don’t Want to Go It Alone?
A Plunge team can be any size-a group of friends, you and your partner, 36 coworkers or a zillion high school students. Plunging as a team is a BLAST, and the majority of our Plungers come in small armies together. Get creative and plunge in costume: wear funky t-shirts or hats, or put together a small musical production where the grand finale is a graceful fall into the water.
Too Chicken to Plunge?
Too cold? Taking a year off? A retired Plunger? No problem! Register as Too Chicken to Plunge. Want to help support more than 10,000 Special Olympics Wisconsin athletes without having to jump in the freezin’ cold water? Register as “Too Chicken to Plunge” and you will still have the ability to raise pledges, earn incentives, and be part of the fun! Chickens are a great addition to every Plunge Team and are great at giving moral support, cheering from the comfort of the sidelines, taking team photos and helping to celebrate your team’s success.
Volunteers Are Needed
The Polar Plunge is our biggest fundraiser of the year and without your help we wouldn't be able to make it a success to help fund over 10,000 athletes in Special Olympics Wisconsin. Volunteers are the backbone of our organization. Contact us if you would like to help out with this event or any other Special Olympics Wisconsin event (we have many throughout the year)!
