Seventy-five years ago, the first season of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL) began. The league itself ran from 1943-1954. Help the Winona Public Library celebrate the women of the AAGPBL throughout the month of July through two programs.
Reminisce on the league with a showing of the 1992 classic film starring Tom Hanks, Geena Davis, Rosie O'Donnell, and Madonna on Thursday, July 12th at 4:30PM. Popcorn and lemonade will be served, and remember, “there’s no crying in baseball!” For movie title, call the Library’s Reference Desk at (507) 452-4860 or go to the website at www.winon.lib.mn.us.
Then Bob Kann, biographer of one of the players and author of Joyce Westerman: Baseball Hero will be at the Library to discuss The Midwestern Women of the All American Girls Professional Baseball League on Wednesday, July 18th at 4:30PM. Of the 550 women that played for the league, 37 were from Wisconsin, 96 from Illinois, and six from Minnesota. Kann will share stories about these women who grew up during the Great Depression, worked in factories and on farms, and eventually played professional baseball.
