La Crosse Seeks Community Input for Zoning and Subdivision Code Update

LA CROSSE, Wis. (February 2025) – The City of La Crosse is launching an update to its Zoning and Subdivision Code, an 18-month initiative aimed at creating a more vibrant, resilient, and livable city. The project builds on previous city planning efforts, including the recently adopted 2040 Comprehensive Plan and the La Crosse 2024 Housing Study.

“Zoning impacts our daily lives. It determines how land in La Crosse can be used and developed, influencing how our neighborhoods look, where businesses operate, and even how we get around,” said Tim Acklin, AICP, Deputy Director of Planning and Development for the City of La Crosse. “However, outdated zoning regulations can be confusing and create barriers to positive change.”

The update will involve a comprehensive review of the city’s existing zoning code, with a focus on improving clarity and addressing challenges such as off-street parking requirements, minimum lot sizes and setbacks, design standards, and permitted uses. The goal is to create a modern, user-friendly code that reflects community needs while simplifying its application.

To ensure broad community participation, the city is planning multiple input opportunities throughout the project. Residents, business owners, and stakeholders are encouraged to attend upcoming workshops, surveys, and public events to help shape the future of La Crosse’s development.

As part of the engagement process, the city will host several events during Housing Week in April 2025. Additionally, pop-up events will take place throughout La Crosse to gather input, share information about the initial survey, and promote the community workshop.

Residents can sign up for updates and learn more about upcoming engagement opportunities by visiting forwardlacrosse.org.
